Beyond the Scan: Mastering the Digital Workflow with iTero
The evolution of intraoral scanning has transformed digital impression systems from isolated data-acquisition devices into comprehensive platforms supporting diagnosis, treatment planning, clinical monitoring, and interdisciplinary digital workflows. As digital dentistry continues to expand, understanding the accuracy, limitations, and clinical relevance of intraoral scanning has become essential for achieving predictable treatment outcomes.
This webinar provides an evidence-based overview of the integration of iTero intraoral scanning technology into contemporary restorative, prosthodontics, implant, and orthodontic workflows. Particular emphasis will be placed on the fundamental concepts of accuracy, trueness, and precision, together with the clinical and technical variables that may influence the quality of acquired digital datasets
Scanning strategies will be analysed in relation to partial- and full-arch acquisition, prepared teeth, emergence profiles, edentulous areas, implant scan bodies, interarch relationships, and digital occlusal records. Potential sources of error – including scanning trajectory, stitching inaccuracies, loss of anatomical reference points, soft-tissue mobility, saliva contamination, reflective surfaces, and cumulative deviation in extended scans – will be discussed from both scientific and clinical perspectives.
Beyond data acquisition, the lecture will explore the diagnostic potential of longitudinal digital records, digital occlusal analysis, treatment simulation, patient monitoring, and AI-assisted assessment. The integration of intraoral scan data with complementary digital datasets and CAD/CAM systems will be examined as part of a comprehensive digital ecosystem, including the clinical implications of STL and PLY data, laboratory communication, restorative design, and interdisciplinary treatment planning.
Clinical cases will illustrate the transition from digital acquisition to data interpretation and clinical decision-making, highlighting indications, limitations, and critical checkpoints within different treatment scenarios.
The objective is to provide clinicians with a scientifically grounded framework for selecting and implementing digital workflows according to clinical indication. Ultimately, predictable digital dentistry depends not solely on the performance of the intraoral scanner, but on the clinician’s understanding of data acquisition, data quality, biological principles, and the limitations inherent to each digital workflow.
Beyond the scan, the true value of digital dentistry lies in transforming accurate data into predictable clinical decisions.
